I asked the question in Facebook; Does anyone recognise this boat. Note foremast appears to be freestanding, the aft mast is stayed. It has a set bow and a set stern, thus is tacking, not shunting. Pascal Lutz replies...
Yes, I know it very well. I was on a mooring buoy next to it inn 2020 and 21 in Raiatea, Iles sous le Vent, French Polynesia. The last time I was there in 2022 it had disappeared from its mooring, no idea what has become of it. Strange and ugly boat, an attempt to built a cheap mock Tahitian outrigger canoe with a mixture of traditional traits and modern technology. It had laid idle on the mooring for ages obviously, covered in terns' guano. ... end of Pascal Lutz comments
My guess, pure speculation, the owner wanted a quick and dirty boat to get on the water. He built a simple 30ft hull, found an unstayed mast hanging around, found an old stayed mast from a yacht hanging around, built or found an ama, obtained a couple of simple crossbeams and made a simple tacking outrigger, shame that it was not used more. Of course this is speculation, we will probably never know the truth
